Introducing MySkillsFuture

MySkillsFuture is a new platform recently launched by SkillsFuture Singapore to help all Singaporeans with planning and developing their careers.  This is certainly welcome news for all, as the portal helps to provide guidance to students as young as 11, all the way to working adults!

This platform provides many different tools and services to offer various kinds of benefits to users. This ranges from job information, training courses as well as job listings.

This may all sound confusing, but fret not! I have done the dirty work, sieving through different parts of the platform to better recommend areas you can focus on when using the platform.

Today, DGG Resume is proud to come up with a guide to teach you how to best make use of the MySkillsFuture platform for your benefit.

Do note that this guide is aimed at the working adults demographic, so it will not cover the entirety of the platform.

Understanding Yourself with MySkillsFuture

As entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk puts it, Self-Awareness and Empathy are the keys to being successful.

Self-awareness is one of the most important attributes you can have.

You want to find a career most suitable for yourself. But you can do so only by having a comprehensive and honest understanding of yourself, your interests, skills and values.

To help you better understand yourself, there are 3 useful tools provided in MySkillsFuture to do just that:

Self-Assessment Tool: Career Interests

If you are feeling completely lost and directionless in your career path, this is a good place to start! This assessment tool helps you to find out the careers that match your interests.

You simply need to answer a set of questions to better understand your top personality types. Next, you will receive suggestions on the different types of jobs that might be of your interest!

You will be given 11 sets of questions, each with a scale from ‘strongly dislike’ to ‘strongly like’.

There are a variety of questions regarding different types of job responsibilities, to suggest your most preferred career choice reflected from your answers.

After the assessment, you will be given a result of your top 3 personality types (out of 6 personality types).

The 6 personality types include:

  • Realistic
  • Investigative
  • Artistic
  • Social
  • Enterprising
  • Conventional

After which, you can click on the tab ‘Related job information’ to explore the suggested jobs that fit your assessment results, as well as the industry that the jobs belong to.

You can then click on the job itself to have a better understanding of the details of each job.

Self-Assessment Tool: Skills Confidence

After understanding suitable jobs for your interests, here is another interesting tool you can try! This tool allows you to find out the areas that you believe that you are good at doing (your confidence in your skills).

Similar to the previous assessment, this tool also consists of 11 sets of questions.

These questions measure how confident you are in completing certain tasks and responsibilities.

After you have completed the questions, you will similarly receive your top 3 personality types. The personality types are also based on RIASEC, identical to the ones used in the self-assessment tool.

Subsequently, you can similarly explore related jobs that fit the attributes that you are most confident in.

Self-Assessment Tool: Work Values

Finally, this last self-assessment tool helps you to find out the work values that are most important to you, and the possible career paths aligned to your work values.

myskillsfuture work values

After you finish the 12 sets of questions, you will receive assessment results showing the work value that you place most importance in.

There are 12 possible work values that the tool offers. The results will display the work values to you in order of importance (most important to least important), based on your answers.

Based on your top work values, you will also be suggested a list of jobs that are aligned to your work value results.

The main purpose of doing these self-assessments is to find out more about yourself; be it your career interests, confidence in your own skills, and values that you place emphasis on.

By having a better understanding, you can now make a more informed decision in choosing your future career paths.

But that’s not all.

After understanding yourself better, what else do you need to do?

Understanding The Market with MySkillsFuture

After understanding yourself better with the above tools, you will also need to understand the market well. This can include the overall industry information such as its background and outlook, as well as different occupations within the industry itself.

It is important to understand the market, as you would want to enter a market that is (i) Promising in the future, and (ii) Has jobs that interest you.

Understanding the market may sound hard, but it doesn’t have to be. You don’t have to scour the web and do tons of research. Simply make use of the MySkillsFuture platform here!

First, you can choose your desired industry between many different choices.

If you are just exploring, feel free to just choose between different industries to learn more!

In this post we will be using Hotel and Accommodation Services as our example industry.

You can observe that the platform provides information about the industry background, facts, outlook, environment and lead agency.

A few key areas that I would recommend taking a more in-depth look include:

i) Outlook

The outlook sub-section gives good information regarding the new areas of upcoming opportunities in the industry, so that you can have a good idea of where you should invest your time and resources in.

ii) Environment

The environment sub-section offers information about the attributes that are best suited for the industry. Here, you can match the attributes against the traits you have, to determine if you are a good fit for the industry.

When you continue scrolling down the page, you will find the section on Occupational Insights. Here, the platform shares information regarding different occupations in the particular industry you have selected.

2 main areas to note here are:

1) The qualifications needed (‘How I Qualify’) for the job, as well as

2) The typical job responsibilities (‘What I Do’) for each occupation.

Additionally, the typical career pathway for each occupation, and the courses related to the industry are also provided!

Scroll further to the end of the page to find out about the current job openings in this industry, and easily apply for them right away!

Improving Yourself: Taking up Training Courses with MySkillsFuture

Constant acquisition of new skills and knowledge is vital in this rapidly changing world. The best way to do so is to take up different training courses related to areas you are interested in exploring.

For example, if you want to be a Concierge in the hospitality industry, you can choose to explore the related courses shown at the right hand side of the page.

It will show you the top recommended courses related to the job, and taking them up will definitely improve your qualifications and chances for your desired job!

Alternatively, you could simply go to the Training Exchange section at the top menu bar of the page.

At the page, if you have a particular course that you have in mind, simply search for the keyword of a course that you are interested in. If not, feel free to explore the Featured Courses provided.

As you search, you can also toggle between different filters, such as training duration, fee required, and minimum qualifications. These filters can help you find a more suitable course based on your needs.

Searching for Jobs through the Jobs Bank with MySkillsFuture

Once you are ready to send in your job applications, you can search for suitable jobs and do so through the ‘Jobs Bank’ page.

You can similarly personalize your search with a specific keyword, category and position level filters, as well as a minimum gross salary.

If you are uncertain of what jobs to apply for, you can check out the  ‘New Jobs’ and ‘Featured Jobs’ tabs provided in the platform.

MySkillsFuture: A Wrap Up

9 Tips to Help You Survive Networking Events

Posted Posted in career tips

networking events header

Networking, the word we have all come to dread.

Along with public speaking and interviews, networking is definitely on the top of my list of ‘Things that I hate to do, but I have to’.

It just doesn’t feel natural trying to connect with strangers at first sight.

Well, turns out, I’m not alone. If you’re reading this now, you probably share the same sentiments.

And this is precisely the purpose of this article today.

No, this article is not going to turn you into a networking god.

But I believe that this article will give you a better idea on how to approach networking events.

I started writing this article with the intention for it to act as a guide for myself, giving me tips and pointers to keep in mind as I go for networking events in future.

Now, I would also like to share these tips with you, to help all of us become more ready and confident in these networking events.

As the old saying goes,

With good preparation, half the (networking) battle is won.

Just like how preparing for an interview is paramount, preparing for networking is no different.

While you cannot prepare for many unforeseen situations, what you can do is prepare for common situations that come up in most networking events. Here are a few that you can explore:

1. Giving Your Self-introduction

A self-introduction is definitely the first thing to prepare.

As you first meet a potential connection, it is important to introduce yourself and your work succinctly and interestingly. The last thing you would want to do is to bore the listener as you rattle on about all your life stories!

You can take reference from these few questions while crafting your self introduction:

  • What are your skills and specialties?
  • What interesting work have you done thus far?
  • What are some of your future plans in your career?

2. Preparing Insightful Questions

Of course, a meaningful conversation cannot be a one-sided monologue from your part.

You will also need to ask good questions to spark the connection’s interest, and to explore his/her skills and background as well.

If this sounds like a tall order, consider some of these questions to help you along:

  • What do you enjoy most in your work?
  • What are some of your future career plans?
  • What is the most challenging part of your work?

3. Research industry trends

Suppose that you are going for an networking event on the E-commerce industry. Most of the participants there will be in touch with the latest news and trends of the industry.

Naturally, the best way to connect is to talk about these topics of interest to them!

These can be great conversation starters that allow you to dig deeper and learn more insights from an industry insider.

Furthermore, demonstrating knowledge in these industry trends also reflect how invested you are in the industry.

Your ability to introduce and discuss these topics well will definitely leave a lasting impression amongst connections.

4. Game plan

If you go into the session blindly, you might often find yourself aimlessly wandering about.

This aimlessness can be rather draining and discouraging, and you might find yourself leaving the event earlier than expected.

A useful way to resolve this is to develop a networking game plan beforehand.

As many of us are goal-oriented, a good way to do this is by developing manageable goals to work towards. Here are some that you can consider:

This helps to provide a direction to work towards, and likely spurs greater focus on reaching the goals you set for yourself.

Now that you have gotten all the preparation out of the way, you are ready for the main event: the networking event itself. What should you take note of during the event?

5. Early bird gets the worm

A common worry when going for networking events is seeing many groups of people already engaging in active conversations.

It can be hard to try and join in and participate in the conversation naturally, so you might find yourself out of the circle.

An easy fix would simply be arriving to the networking event earlier!

This way, you can start smaller, more meaningful conversations before all the hustle and bustle begins. You will also have less competition for people’s attention and interest!

6. Listen

With so much prior preparation (see above), it would be understandable if you wanted to share everything about yourself and what you know to your potential connections.

But relationship building is a two-way street.

To build a meaningful relationship during the networking, you need to be genuinely curious about what the other party has to say as well.

Only by listening fully, can you also ask meaningful questions that will actually benefit yourself.

Probe into his/her experiences, lessons and other details that you normally will not have access to.

7. Asking for his/her contact

After having a good time sharing both your stories, do not forget this one last vital note: Asking for the connections contact details.

This is possibly the only way for you to continue and build this professional relationship even outside of networking events.

Do give the person options to choose from, so that he/she can give you a means to contact that he/she is comfortable with. This can range from mobile numbers, email addresses, or even adding on LinkedIn, just to name a few.

After the networking event, give yourself a nice pat on the back if you did manage to achieve the goals you initially set.

But the work doesn’t stop there.

8. Take notes

After talking to many connections, it can be hard to keep track of all the new names, new faces and all the topics discussed.

As the conversations are still fresh in your head, jot down some notes to help yourself structure your thoughts, and keep track of your discussions.

9. Follow up

As the memories and impressions you made are still fresh in your mind, take time to follow up with the new connections made during the networking event within 1-2 days.

You can remind them of yourself and the topics you discussed. You can also remind them of the problems he/she was sharing, and perhaps offer valuable insights to these problems that they might be facing.

Hope these tips have helped you better understand what to expect at networking events, and what to keep in mind before going for one.

Remember to go with an open heart. Try to learn and explore new areas you are unfamiliar with, and build genuine connections in the process!
